Is Ambition a Virtue ?

To pull it closer, you have to reach it first…

In order for something great to happen in a man’s in life, there has to be an internal fire that burns that sets in motion every single thing that comes after as a natural consequence. Or hasn’t?

Let me explain. Ambition is often defined as “a strong desire to do or achieve something”. A will, if you will to do bigger and better things for you or for the world in general. Is it enough though to be considered a virtue? Something indeed so positive that can by itself set a course that determines a man’s life?

It is certainly the beginning! I can assure you of that. If it wasn’t for that, nothing would ever happen. You have to put your one foot in front of the other in order to actually walk. It’s the beginning of everything and the foundation for any, if not a great start. It is a great trait to have and possible a trait for every one of us to look up to and admire to a friend and even to a life partner. If no-one propels you forward, you have to propel yourself. It gives you motive to see one fighting for everything he/she stands for and trying to keep up with everything that’s going on.

However, as courageous and admirable as it may seem, it is almost always not a virtue to have! Ambition is only worthy, as long as it leads to virtuous outcomes. To explain myself, ambition is a characteristic that demands an internal flame, fire or desire in order for someone to act! If there is no outcome as result of this internal procedure, it might as well never happen in the first place. But, logically thinking it’s the best — and most of the times — the easiest way for any good outcome that has ever happened. Because sooner or later, you will act! Let this thing burn deep inside and you’ll become a walking fire!

That’s why ambition is not considered by the greats of this world a positive trait, but for me is the biggest one out there. And if you don’t use it, loss is on you my friend.

PS. Don’t let it kill you. Use it wisely. No-one wants to get burnt by its own flames. Patience will reward you, but only if you act!
